Our History

Pioneering human-relevant research to replace animal testing ethically

Our Journey Begins

The proprietary technology underpinning the company was invented by Professor Gareth Cave and Dr Elvina Chrysanthou and is protected through Nottingham Trent University’s intellectual property portfolio, including patent application GB2403788.9.

Supported by Innovate UK’s ICURe Discover, Explore and Exploit programmes, the technology has progressed from academic research and prototype development to validation and commercialisation. More than 260 stakeholder interviews across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, CRO and other sectors have helped shape the company’s commercial strategy and identify CNS drug development as its strongest initial market opportunity.

FLUIDIC Biosciences is now progressing through the Nottingham Trent University spin-out process while developing pilot studies and strategic industry collaboration.

FLUIDIC Biosciences was born from research undertaken within Professor Gareth Cave’s team at Nottingham Trent University. The technology was originally developed to create a more physiologically relevant blood–brain barrier model for central nervous system research.

Its scientific foundations were combined with the vision of co-founder and CEO Dr Lorena Lizarraga to replace animal testing with more ethical, human-relevant and predictive research methods. Together with Professor Gareth Cave, co-founder and CSO, this shared ambition shaped FLUIDIC Biosciences into a company focused on advancing human-relevant in vitro technologies.
